The ocoee river

The Ocoee River in Tennessee is the most popular class IV whitewater river in America. The five-mile Ocoee whitewater rafting area, located below Ocoee Dam No. 2, attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year.

The river runs like a silver thread through the heart of the Cherokee National Forest in southeast Tennessee. The area also features camping, hiking, bike trails and a beautiful lake in addition to whitewater rafting.

The volatile nature of the Ocoee River generates more than miles of spectacular whitewater. Rafting takes place on two sections of the river called the "Upper Ocoee River" and the "Middle Ocoee River." Each section is about five miles of class IV rapids and takes about two hours to run (six hours for a full river trip, which includes lunch.)

The Upper Ocoee River includes the incredible race course created for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games, with such rapids as "Slam Dunk", "Mikey's Ledge", "Smiley Face" and the notorious "Humongous", which has even taken Olympic athletes for a ride.

The Middle Ocoee River is the classic section that Cherokee Rafting has been running for over 27 years. The well known rapids include "Grumpy", "Broken Nose", "Slice and Dice", "Table Saw," and "Hell Hole" for an explosive finish.

Enjoy an entire day trip on both sections, a half-day trip on one section, or you can even schedule a "back to back" trip and run one section twice in the same day! The Middle Ocoee River runs five days a week in the summer and weekends during the spring and fall.
